No matter the context or subject, our lives consistently revolve around a fundamental question: How do we want to live, and how can we shape our future to make it better for ourselves, those around us, and the environment we inhabit? Last week, as I had the honor of moderating two diverse events, it became clear that the underlying theme in each was the same – the power of our personal values in influencing our choices and the world around us.

The first event was the annual conference for the Employee Councils of IG BCE, where we discussed the industrial policy framework in Germany and how it assists companies in navigating transformations. The very next day, I found myself moderating a conference on „Assisted Suicide“ for the Frankfurt Health Department. Two seemingly disparate topics, yet both fundamentally grappling with the same questions about the kind of life we want to lead and how we can make it a reality.

Why Personal Values Matter in My Life

Personal values are the compass by which I navigate my journey through life. They’re the principles that guide my decisions and actions, providing a sense of purpose and clarity in a world full of diverse perspectives. Here’s why my personal values are of paramount importance:

Empathy: The ability to understand and share the feelings of others is a core value that helps me connect with people on a deeper level. It fuels my desire to make a positive impact and foster understanding in every situation.

Respect: Respect for individuals, their opinions, and their cultures is a foundational value for me. It’s the bedrock of meaningful relationships and open, constructive dialogue.

Courage: Courage empowers me to stand up for what I believe in, even when faced with adversity. It fuels my commitment to promoting change and advocating for causes that align with my values.

Sustainable Development: I value sustainable development not just in environmental terms but also in the growth and well-being of people. It inspires me to make choices that consider the long-term impact and ensure the prosperity of future generations.

Open-Mindedness: Keeping an open mind allows me to learn from every experience and person I encounter. It’s a value that helps me adapt, grow, and embrace new perspectives.

Resilience: Life is full of challenges, and resilience is the strength to endure and bounce back from them. It’s a value that keeps me moving forward, no matter what obstacles come my way.

Reflecting on My Own Values

In light of my recent experiences, I took the opportunity to revisit my personal values. It’s a reflective process that I believe everyone should undertake. Ask yourself: What are your core values, and are you consistently living by them? Where might improvements be necessary?

The values of Empathy, Respect, Courage, Sustainable Development, Open-Mindedness, and Resilience are my guiding stars. They inspire me to live a life that’s in harmony with my principles, fostering meaningful connections and striving for positive change.

Your Turn

What are your core values, and how do they influence your life’s journey? Take a moment to reflect on the principles that guide your decisions and actions. Engage in a dialogue about the values that drive you and shape your path. After all, it’s our values that not only define who we are but also the kind of life we lead.
